Our 2008 Open Day was a great success despite some rain, with lovely food, great fun to kids, marvellous raffle (read more about the raffle), honey and jam and a chance for us to show off our lovely allotment site and raise some money for the site.
On Sunday 6 July 2008 about 150 people came along to an open day at our lovely green and spacious allotments. They didn’t let the showery weather put them off, but enjoyed food made with plotholders’ own fresh produce, including delicious vegetable curry, as well as jerk chicken, fried fish and chicken, lamb curry and rice and peas.
Children had a lovely time with a treasure hunt, face painting, and drawing pictures based on interesting pottery fragments found in the allotments. Dave Gifford from the Walthamstow town’s Allotments Association judged the children’s pictures and awarded their prizes.
Local businesses donated wonderful prizes for a raffle, and we sold allotment honey and jam, plants and produce, and in total made nearly £300 for the allotment site.
Visitors had a look round the site, and many remarked on how lovely it was. They also looked at a photo display about the allotments, picked up free gardening information, and several signed up to the waiting list at thriving and popular allotment site.
