On a bitterly cold but sunny day at the end of January some gardeners can be seen on their plots.

Barry, his dad, and his stepbrother Dave are getting to work preparing the ground. Ruth is harvesting parsnips. Bridget is turning her compost. And Suleyman is sowing broad beans on his aunt Aydin’s plot.

Some broad beans are already sprouting on Mohamed’s plot, the blackcurrants are budding on David’s plot, and the hazel catkins suggest spring is not far away.
