Over
300 people turned up to enjoy the food, fun and fresh air and sunshine at a fabulous allotment open day 5 July 2009.
They
enjoyed food made with plot holders’ own fresh produce, including delicious
vegetable and chicken curry, jerk chicken, rice and peas, couscous and a
variety of Turkish dishes.
Children
had a lovely time with a treasure hunt, face painting, and drawing pictures.
Sheennagh Cowie from the Walthamstow
Town’s Allotments
Association judged the children’s pictures and fire fighter Dave awarded the
prizes. And several people proudly displayed beautiful henna and glitter hand
paintings done by

Adults
and children were thrilled by the London Fire Brigade fire engine that came to demonstrate
equipment for fighting fires and dealing with other incidents. One lucky
gardener had his plot watered by the fire hose, and others had a go with the
metal cutter. Kids tried on helmets and sat in the fire engine cab.
Fire
fighter George Bankes awarded the wonderful prizes in the raffle that were
donated by local businesses, and we sold allotment honey jam, plants and
produce.
Gardeners
had worked hard to get their gardens ready to show off, and visitors had a look
round the site and took the chance to chat to gardeners at work on their plots.
They also looked at a photo display about the allotments, picked up free
gardening information, and several signed up to the waiting list at the
thriving and popular allotment site.
