Volunteers
organised by Community Service
Volunteers, and supervised by allotment committee members completed the
raised bed plot. See photos
     A team of
30 volunteers from KPMG worked through terrible conditions with little respite
from the rain to complete a project. They built on the work of two previous
groups to get the plot ready for disabled gardeners or those who find
traditional gardening difficult. They cleared the weeds, put down weed
suppressing membrane and bark chippings, built compost bunkers and constructed
raised beds. The team also tidied up the compost heap, providing good compost
to make sure the crops grow well.
Both team
leaders from KPMG, Katie and Vicky, said they were amazed at how many volunteers
turned up in dreadful conditions, worked through the rain and completed
everything we set out to achieve.
Ta ke-away pizzas were a welcome and reviving lunch. Everyone involved
felt a great sense of achievement. Some of the volunteers said they would now
be interested in allotment gardening.
Peter Aiano,
site chair and project leader said: "I turned up expecting the worst because
of the weather, and suddenly all these wonderful, motivated people turned up to
complete our raised bed project which is designed to help disabled
gardeners".
The scheme
for bringing volunteers from industry to help with community projects is
organised by Community Service
Volunteers.
