This year's Walthamstow Town's Allotments Association annual social and prize-giving event 2 September was a feast for all, and a chance for prizewinners to collect their trophies.
Gardeners came along from the four allotment sites that make up the association, together with members of the public invited by the host site, Hoxton Manor Allotments, who this year combined the event with an open day and 50th anniversary celebration.
Prizes were given out by London Borough of Waltham Forest allotment officer, Ken Johnson. First prize, beating the rest of the associations's 400 allotment gardens, was won by John and Judith Lampard (see photo on left, below), while the trophy for the best site out of the four, Cheshire Fields, was collected by secretary Roger Huddle (left in photo below) and chair Derek Raynor (right).
In the competition this year Barbara Humm from Chestnuts Farm won Second prize, while Cheshire Fields gardeners took third, Low Hall Farm took fourth and equal 7th, and Hoxton Manor gardeners took 5th, 6th and equal 7th.
Everyone enjoyed the food, prepared by Hoxton Manor plot holders, including Georgena's delicious lamb curry and Maureen’s tasty vegetable curry, together with rice and peas, jerk chicken, cakes and popcorn, and lots more.
Thanks to everyone who made, brought and served food, including Georgena and members of her family, Maureen, Eva and many others.
Visitors to the site admired the community shed, built by plot holders with lottery funding, and the green and leafy allotment site and gardens.
The annual event for association members is held on the first Sunday in September, at a different site each year. Read more about the Walthamstow Town's Allotment Association
